Getting out of the old place

Request quotes and we send your details to up to three vetted GTA companies in that category. You compare, you choose, you pay them directly.

What this move will cost

Built from typical 2026 GTA crew rates. Use it to sanity-check a quote, not to hold anyone to it.

Estimated total

$1,900 – $2,700

Before tax and tip. Crews in the GTA are usually tipped $20–$40 per mover for a full day.

Estimates assume a weekday move. Last weekend of the month and any day between June and September run 15–30% higher — book six weeks out if you can.

    Landing in the new place

Internet on day one, a bed that arrives before you do, locks that only you have keys to. Book these before you move, not after.

    Change of address, Ontario edition

The order matters. Mail forwarding first, then the government pieces with legal deadlines, then everything else.

    Do these within 6 days

    • Driver's licence — ServiceOntario requires an address change within six days of moving
    • Vehicle permit (ownership) — same six-day window
    • Ontario health card (OHIP) — update to keep coverage clean
    • Voter registration through Elections Ontario and Elections Canada

Change your Ontario address in one form

    Mail and money

    • Canada Post mail forwarding — start it two weeks before, keep it running for a year
    • CRA My Account, so your refund and benefit cheques follow you
    • Bank, credit cards, investment and RESP accounts
    • Home and auto insurance — your premium changes with the postal code
    • Employer payroll and benefits

    Set up mail forwarding

    People who need to know

    • Family doctor, dentist, optometrist and any specialists
    • Pharmacy — transfer prescriptions to the branch near the new place
    • School registration and daycare, with the new catchment confirmed
    • Veterinarian and pet licence with the city
    • Lawyer handling the closing

    Quietly expensive if you forget

    • Property tax and city utility accounts in your name
    • Enbridge gas and Alectra, Toronto Hydro or Oakville Hydro
    • Water heater rental — the tank contract usually stays with the house
    • Alarm monitoring contract at the old address
    • Gym, storage unit, meal kits and every other subscription

    Questions people ask

    Is Boxed actually free?

Yes. You never pay us. Companies pay us a referral fee when you book them, which is why the service costs you nothing. It also means we only list companies we would send our own family to — a bad referral costs us the relationship.

How do you pick the companies?

Every mover on Boxed carries cargo and liability insurance, has a real GTA address, and holds a rating above four stars across at least fifty reviews. We re-check twice a year and drop anyone whose complaints start stacking up.

What happens after I request a quote?

Your details go to up to three companies in that category. They contact you within one business day, usually by phone. You compare, book directly with whichever you like, and pay them — never us.

When should I book a mover in the GTA?

Six weeks ahead for a summer or end-of-month move, three weeks for a quiet weekday in February. The last Friday of every month and the July 1 and August 1 lease turnovers are the hardest days of the year to staff.

    Do you handle out-of-province moves?

We list long-haul carriers for moves from the GTA to anywhere in Canada. Cross-border and overseas moves need a customs broker, which is outside what we cover.

What do you do with my information?

We use it to send your plan and to pass to companies you specifically ask for quotes from. Nothing else. We don't sell lists, and you can ask us to delete everything at any time.
